This is one of the very first wildflowers to bloom in the spring. Though sometimes they bloom in the late winter. I have seen them in bloom as early as the second week in February. In some areas, like Catherine Creek, they fill the landscape with the bright purple blooms. Nature has provided us with a great color scheme in the Grass Widow: the rich purple tepals and yellow anthers. A perfect match. There is a white variety of the grass widow; it is highlighted as a separate wildflower here in this website.
