The first time I went to Zumwalt Prairie in far Northeastern Oregon, the meadows were a pinkish-red color due to the abundance of Prairie Smoke. This is knows as Old Man’s Whiskers in certain regions. Only growing east of the Cascade Mountains, Prairie Smoke has long feathery plumes which are the seed heads, as shown in photos below.
